Markree Castle

Markree Castle, Clooneenroe, Collooney, County Sligo, Ireland

About Venue

Markree Castle's history dates back to the 17th Century when the Cooper family acquired the estate. It transformed from a fort guarding a ford to a grand manor, peaking at 40,000 acres by 1727. Architect Francis Johnson expanded and improved the castle in the 19th Century, creating the foundation for the Markree Castle we see today. The early 20th Century brought challenges, including the Irish Civil War, causing damage and abandonment. In the 1980s, Charles Cooper and his wife Mary renovated the castle into a hotel. In 2015, they retired, selling the castle to the Corscadden Family. Today, Markree Castle offers elegance, service, and a romantic experience, nested in County Sligo on the Wild Atlantic Way.
